Ex-Securities Chief of Crypto and Cybersecurity Moves to Private Sector

David Hirsh Joins McGuireWoods to Strengthen Securities and Crypto Regulatory Practice

David Hirsh, previously the leader of the SEC’s Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit, has transitioned to McGuireWoods as a partner based in Washington, D.C. His expertise will significantly bolster the firm’s securities enforcement and regulatory advisory services.

During his tenure at the SEC, Hirsh spearheaded groundbreaking investigations and legal actions related to cryptocurrency and cybersecurity, shaping the agency’s regulatory framework and enforcement strategies for digital assets. His role involved defining the SEC’s priorities for cybersecurity and navigating the complexities of crypto asset regulation.

Before heading the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit, Hirsh was a senior advisor to SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw, where he contributed to enforcement strategy and engaged with various stakeholders including market participants, legislators, and the media.

Hirsh’s appointment at McGuireWoods comes as the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrency intensifies. The SEC has ramped up its enforcement against crypto firms, targeting major entities like Coinbase and Kraken, as well as venture capital firms involved in the sector.

At McGuireWoods, Hirsh will leverage his deep knowledge of securities and crypto regulation to address a wide range of enforcement and compliance issues. Robert Muckenfuss, head of the Financial Services & Securities Enforcement Department at McGuireWoods, highlighted the strategic value of Hirsh’s background:

“As cybersecurity and cryptocurrency laws continue to evolve, Dave’s extensive experience in securities enforcement will be instrumental in guiding our clients through these dynamic regulatory challenges.”

Hirsh’s addition to the McGuireWoods team underscores the growing need for sophisticated legal guidance in the rapidly changing areas of crypto and cybersecurity regulation.
