STAMFORD, Conn- According to a recent survey by GetApp, senior executives are increasingly becoming primary targets for cybercriminals, with 72% of cybersecurity experts in the US indicating that this group has been the focus of cyberattacks in the past 18 months. This finding, detailed in the 2024 Executive Cybersecurity Report from GetApp, highlights a concerning rise in the sophistication of these attacks, including a notable increase in the use of AI-driven deepfakes, which are now involved in 27% of reported incidents.

Despite these alarming trends, many organizations have yet to update their cybersecurity practices to address the specific risks faced by their senior leaders. Notably, 37% of companies worldwide do not offer targeted cybersecurity training for their executives, creating a significant vulnerability in their defenses.

David Jani, a senior security analyst at GetApp, emphasizes the urgency of the situation: “Senior executives are key custodians of critical business information, making them prime targets for cyber threats. It’s crucial for businesses to implement specialized cybersecurity training for their leadership teams.”

The frequency of attacks on senior executives is also on the rise. Among US companies that have experienced cyber incidents, 69% report an increase in attack frequency over the past three years, surpassing the global average increase of 58%. This surge corresponds with the growing complexity of attacks, with AI-assisted deepfakes and sophisticated phishing schemes becoming more common.

Additionally, more than half (54%) of US firms have encountered at least one case of identity fraud affecting a senior executive in the last 18 months, significantly higher than the global average of 41%. This trend indicates that US senior executives are at a greater risk for financial fraud compared to their global counterparts.

In light of these escalating threats, businesses are advised to adopt comprehensive cybersecurity strategies that include ongoing executive training, advanced security measures such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), and robust data encryption. Regular software updates, vigilant network monitoring, and preparation for emerging threats like deepfakes are also essential components of an effective defense.
