On Wednesday, a security expert unveiled a flaw in iOS that can lead to temporary crashes of iPhones and iPads when a particular sequence of four characters is entered into certain search fields. This issue impacts the Apple mobile interface known as Springboard.
The problem arises when typing “”:: into certain search bars on iOS devices. However, it appears that only the first three characters “”: are crucial; any additional character triggers the crash, according to TechCrunch. Entering these characters causes Springboard to crash momentarily, leading to a reboot of the device to the lock screen.
This bug has been observed in two main areas:
- The Search bar within the Settings app.
- The App Library search bar, which is accessed by swiping right on the home screen.
Users have reported varying effects from this bug, including brief black flashes on the screen, the Settings app closing, or Spotlight returning to the Home Screen.
The impact of this bug appears to differ based on the device and iOS version:
- Some users see only Settings and Spotlight crashing.
- Others experience crashes in the App Library as well.
- Devices running iOS 18.1 developer beta and iOS 17.6.1 show inconsistent results.
Apple has yet to release a statement or fix for this issue, but the company is known for promptly addressing such bugs through updates.
While this flaw is less critical than previous issues like the infamous “Effective Power” bug from 2015, users can avoid activating it by not entering the problematic sequence into the affected search bars. Since this character sequence is not commonly used, accidental triggering is unlikely.
