Hackers Exploit HDMI Cables to Steal Your Passwords

Security experts have uncovered a novel method for hackers to extract sensitive data, such as passwords, by intercepting signals from HDMI cables—a significant concern for computer users.

A study from researchers at Universidad de la República in Uruguay explains this technique, which utilizes artificial intelligence to interpret electromagnetic emissions from HDMI connections, reconstructing the content displayed on a computer screen.

The researchers demonstrated that electromagnetic radiation emitted by HDMI cables could be captured using common software-defined radio equipment. They then applied deep learning algorithms to these signals, achieving the reconstruction of text and images from the computer screen with up to 70% accuracy.

Lead researcher Federico Larroca stated, “This level of accuracy is often enough for an attacker to discern passwords, sensitive information, or even encrypted communications shown on a screen.” The AI system developed by the team significantly improved previous eavesdropping efforts, reducing character error rates by over 60 percentage points.

While similar vulnerabilities had been associated with older CRT monitors, it was believed that the advanced digital signaling of modern HDMI connections made such attacks unfeasible. This new research reveals that AI can indeed overcome these barriers, potentially endangering millions of computer users.

Fortunately, executing this type of attack requires substantial technical skill and specialized tools. The researchers suggest that typical home users are unlikely targets, though government entities and large corporations may face higher risks from sophisticated attackers.

Larroca warned, “It’s plausible that advanced hackers or state-level actors are already employing similar techniques. An attacker could feasibly capture HDMI emissions from outside a building with equipment concealed in a nearby vehicle.”

To safeguard against this threat, cybersecurity specialists advise being mindful of your environment when handling sensitive information, particularly near windows or in public areas. Employing encrypted connections and avoiding the display of passwords on external monitors connected via HDMI can also reduce risks.

The researchers have made their findings public to aid in the development of defensive strategies. This discovery highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in the ever-evolving landscape of digital privacy and security.
