A recent report has highlighted a significant surge in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in the first half of 2024, revealing a 106% increase compared to the latter half of 2023. Compiled by Zayo Group, the report analyzed over 62,000 detected threats among its customers during this period.
DDoS attacks have not only become more frequent but also more potent, with the average attack duration reaching around 45 minutes. The financial impact on organizations has been severe, costing approximately $270,000 per incident, which translates to about $6,000 per minute.
This report follows shortly after Microsoft announced a substantial DDoS attack in late July that crippled its Azure and 365 services for nearly eight hours. In response, Microsoft has pledged to enhance its Azure network’s validation processes by November, alongside improvements in monitoring.
Key Findings:
Telecommunications continues to be the primary target for DDoS attacks, accounting for 57% of incidents, as reported by Zayo. Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector has overtaken retail as the industry experiencing the largest-scale attacks. The healthcare sector is also experiencing increasingly severe attacks.
This report comes in the wake of a troubling resurgence in DDoS activity in 2023, where both the volume and sophistication of attacks reached unprecedented levels, according to Cloudflare. Attackers exploited the new HTTP/2 Rapid Reset zero-day vulnerability, contributing to the highest recorded DDoS activity last year.
Additionally, a report from Akamai and FS-ISAC in March revealed a sharp increase in DDoS attacks targeting the financial services sector.
