ATCorp’s virtual cybersecurity platform, CYRIN, has introduced a new interactive scenario designed to enhance students’ skills in investigating, analyzing, and responding to cyberattacks on an organization.
In this latest Attack Scenario, participants assume the role of a network security administrator tasked with managing a cyberattack. The scenario presents a situation where an external host has been continuously scanning the organization’s network. Students are equipped with an Incident Response Rack, which includes:
- A server loaded with advanced cybersecurity tools.
- A workstation featuring a browser-based interface for data analysis from these tools.
Participants will utilize these resources to:
- Identify which network service is being targeted by the attacker.
- Determine if the attacker successfully locates and exploits a vulnerability within this service.
Following the attack analysis, students must take action to block the intruder from the network. The scenario includes a quiz to assess their grasp of the attack and strategies for prevention.
Why This Matters
Investigating unusual network activity is a critical skill in cybersecurity. To excel in this scenario, students must employ intrusion detection systems and firewalls to capture and scrutinize potentially harmful traffic and logs, gaining insight into closing security vulnerabilities.
This scenario aligns with NIST Work Roles:
- Cyber Defense Analyst (PR-CDA-001)
- Cyber Defense Incident Responder (PR-CIR-001)
This exercise is part of CYRIN’s continuous innovation in training and education for cybersecurity. CYRIN’s labs and scenarios are designed to be affordable, user-friendly, and adaptable to various schedules, making them a gateway to mastering cybersecurity.
