Cyberattacks Disrupt Nucor’s Steel Production Operations

Nucor Responds Decisively to Cybersecurity Breach Affecting Operations

In a rare disruption to its operations, Nucor Corporation—North America’s leading steel producer—has paused production at multiple facilities following a cyber intrusion that targeted its digital infrastructure.

The company identified unusual activity on its IT systems earlier this week and swiftly initiated a full-scale cybersecurity response. Rather than waiting for external confirmation, Nucor took the initiative to isolate and power down potentially compromised systems across various locations to prevent the attack from spreading.

With an emphasis on transparency and risk containment, Nucor has engaged top-tier cybersecurity consultants and is cooperating with federal authorities to trace the origin of the breach and mitigate any lasting effects. While specific facilities haven’t been named, the disruption is known to span a portion of the company’s expansive operational network, which includes nearly 300 sites across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

“After detecting unauthorized access, we acted immediately to safeguard our people, our assets, and our data,” a company spokesperson said. “Our priority is safe restoration—not just of systems, but of trust.”

To date, there is no confirmation of data theft or ransomware demands. No group has publicly claimed responsibility for the intrusion. Nucor has opted to withhold further technical details pending a comprehensive forensic review.

This incident highlights the growing exposure of industrial operations to cyber threats, especially in sectors where digital modernization must coexist with legacy equipment. Analysts caution that disruptions to a steel supplier of Nucor’s scale—which produces a quarter of U.S. raw steel—can have cascading effects across construction, automotive, infrastructure, and manufacturing industries.

Nucor has emphasized that the shutdown is precautionary and temporary. Work is underway to securely restore operations in phases, and the company remains in close communication with partners and stakeholders throughout the recovery process.
