Cybersecurity analysts at F5 Labs have unveiled a powerful new diagnostic utility aimed at helping organizations detect exposure to a severe security flaw in Apache Parquet. The tool, released on May 5, 2025, is designed to validate susceptibility to a critical remote code execution issue marked as CVE-2025-30065 — a vulnerability assigned the highest CVSS score of 10.0.

Apache Parquet, a cornerstone format in many big data and analytics platforms, was found to be vulnerable in versions up to and including 1.15.0. The flaw originates in the parquet-avro module, where malicious schema content can lead to arbitrary code execution during file parsing. This presents a serious risk, especially for systems that routinely process untrusted or external Parquet files in automated data pipelines.

Frustrated by the lack of reliable detection tools — as existing proof-of-concept exploits were either ineffective or too limited — F5 Labs developed a purpose-built “canary exploit” to fill the gap. The tool crafts a specially structured Parquet file that prompts vulnerable systems to instantiate the javax.swing.JEditorKit class using a string argument. This results in an outbound HTTP GET request to a pre-defined URL, providing a clear, passive indication that the system is at risk.

“Our analysis found that existing PoCs lacked functional value or clarity,” F5 Labs noted. “We wanted a way for security teams to verify exposure with confidence.”

While rated with a critical CVSS score of 10.0, researchers point out that exploiting this vulnerability in real-world scenarios isn’t straightforward.

The core issue stems from the way the parquet-avro module handles schema parsing. It enables attackers to instantiate Java objects—limited to those already present in the target’s classpath and only if they accept a single String parameter. Though this constraint reduces general exploitability, the risk remains significant in the context of complex data environments.

“This isn’t a mass-exploitation situation by default,” F5 Labs explained. “But for systems that meet the right conditions—especially in AI or machine learning pipelines—it’s a sleeping threat.”

Given Apache Parquet’s widespread role in big data architecture, especially within analytics and AI-driven systems, F5 Labs urges organizations to evaluate and secure their deployments now rather than later.
