As schools reopen across the nation, parents have their hands full—between packing lunches, managing carpools, and ensuring everyone gets to bed on time, it’s no wonder that identity theft prevention may not be a top priority.
But perhaps it should be.
According to cybersecurity firm Check Point Software, the education sector has become the most targeted industry this year, with attacks increasing by 37% compared to last year.
The education sector now experiences more weekly cyberattacks than government, healthcare, and even finance.
Chris Nottingham from Check Point noted that industries like healthcare and education were once less appealing targets for cybercriminals.
“Cybercrime is expanding as a business,” Nottingham explained. “Criminals have realized that sectors like education often lack robust cybersecurity measures.”
For many school districts across the country, keeping pace with the latest cybersecurity technologies can be challenging.
“The primary focus of most educational institutions is on providing education, not necessarily on maintaining top-tier cybersecurity,” Nottingham said.
