International Cybercrime Suspect Captured in Moldova After Major Dutch-Moldovan Sting
A 45-year-old foreign national, wanted globally for a series of high-profile cybercrimes, has been arrested in Moldova following a meticulously coordinated law enforcement operation between Dutch and Moldovan authorities.
The individual is accused of orchestrating a string of ransomware attacks that inflicted millions of euros in losses on Dutch enterprises, including a catastrophic hit on the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). That 2021 cyberattack, which paralyzed NWO’s grant systems, caused an estimated €4.5 million in damages and halted crucial scientific funding processes.
The arrest, executed with the support of Moldova’s elite “Fulger” Special Forces Brigade, marks the culmination of months of collaboration between Moldova’s Cybercrime Center, the National Investigation Inspectorate, prosecutors from PCCOCS, and their Dutch counterparts.
Authorities say the suspect had been living temporarily in Moldova at the time of his arrest. He now faces serious charges including ransomware deployment, extortion, and laundering illicit gains from attacks primarily targeting Dutch institutions.
During a search of the suspect’s residence and vehicle on May 6, 2025, investigators uncovered a trove of evidence: €84,800 in cash, encrypted digital wallets, laptops, mobile devices, and multiple data storage units believed to contain critical forensic material.
This high-stakes operation highlights the expanding reach of international cybercrime networks—and the growing power of cross-border law enforcement cooperation in disrupting them.

The recent capture of an internationally wanted cybercriminal in Moldova marks more than a single arrest—it signals a deepening alignment among nations in the fight against digital threats.
Once considered a soft target, Moldova has rapidly evolved into a frontline player in cybersecurity enforcement. At the core of this transformation is the Centre for Combating Cybercrime, now a key driver in major cross-border investigations.
“This outcome is proof of what determined, cross-national coordination can achieve,” a representative from Moldova’s Ministry of Internal Affairs stated. “Our close work with Dutch investigators was instrumental in tracking down and detaining the suspect.”
With extradition proceedings underway, the suspect remains in Moldovan custody as preparations are made to transfer him to the Netherlands, where he will face charges tied to large-scale ransomware operations.
This breakthrough follows a wave of international cyber enforcement activity, including the first Moldova–Netherlands Cyber Dialogue held earlier this year in Chisinau. The talks laid the groundwork for strategic collaboration—sharing intelligence, synchronizing response protocols, and aligning legal frameworks to better combat cybercrime across borders.
