The security landscape for Windows has entered a new phase in 2025, defined by agile, persistent adversaries and Microsoft’s rapid shift toward proactive, identity-centric defense strategies. The year began with a wave of highly coordinated cyberattacks, signaling a critical escalation in both scale and sophistication.
A Surge in Threat Activity
February 2025 brought a dramatic spike in global ransomware activity, up 87% from the previous month, with 956 confirmed victims. This surge reflects not only attacker adaptability but also a growing emphasis on exploiting deep system-level weaknesses—particularly within drivers and administrative privilege flows.
The “Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver” (BYOVD) technique has emerged as a dominant threat vector. The ransomware boom continued in February with explosive growth: Clop ransomware surged 453%, and Play ransomware climbed 360%. Manufacturing bore the brunt, suffering a 112% increase in attacks compared to January.
Preparing for the Next Phase
As Microsoft systematically reduces kernel exposure and tightens endpoint permissions, adversaries are pivoting to increasingly exotic privilege-escalation tactics. To stay ahead, Microsoft is preparing to transition security components from kernel mode to user mode—radically reducing the potential blast radius of successful exploits.
