Severe Oracle VirtualBox Bug Enables Host Takeover via Local Exploits

A high-severity flaw in Oracle VM VirtualBox, identified as CVE-2024-21113, has been resolved following a disclosure that exposed the potential for local attackers to escalate privileges and breach host-level virtualization boundaries.

Rated 8.8 on the CVSS v3.1 scale, the issue impacted all VirtualBox versions preceding 7.0.16, and was rooted in weak enforcement of access permissions within the platform’s Core module. Attackers with limited permissions on a guest machine could exploit the vulnerability to run arbitrary code directly on the host—compromising the virtualization layer and any co-hosted environments.

Technical Insight

The exploit centers on flaws in VirtualBox’s emulated OHCI USB controller. Analysts discovered a synchronization lapse—specifically, missing locks during object interactions—that left critical host resources exposed to manipulation. A successful exploit allows attackers to write to hypervisor memory and execute malicious payloads outside the guest sandbox.

Importantly, while attackers must first gain access to a target guest OS, the downstream effects of a successful compromise are broad, potentially disrupting multiple virtual systems due to the hypervisor’s central role (Scope: Changed).
