Severe Flaw in Apache ActiveMQ’s NMS Client Exposes Systems to Remote Exploits
A newly revealed critical vulnerability (CVE-2025-29953) in the Apache ActiveMQ NMS OpenWire Client could allow threat actors to execute arbitrary code remotely, putting countless enterprise systems at risk.
The root cause lies in how the client handles serialized data when interacting with untrusted servers. Versions prior to 2.1.1 are vulnerable due to unsafe deserialization—an issue classified under CWE-502. This type of flaw enables attackers to inject specially crafted payloads, triggering execution of malicious code during communication via the OpenWire protocol.
With a CVSS score of 9.8, the vulnerability is considered extremely dangerous because it requires minimal attacker effort while offering high payoff: total compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and system availability.

Although Apache rolled out a deny/allow list mechanism in version 2.1.0 to mitigate the risk, researchers demonstrated that this approach can be circumvented—leaving many deployments still vulnerable.
Adding to the urgency, Microsoft’s .NET team has deprecated binary serialization—the same method leveraged by the NMS client—in the upcoming .NET 9 release, further reinforcing the need to move away from outdated serialization techniques.

To protect against active exploitation, Apache has released version 2.1.1, which fully patches the vulnerability. Until systems can be updated, organizations should:
